When can I hand them out? I recall the only time was before the championship game, but I could be wrong....

You mean cut players? You can do it anytime until the CFL Bowl stage.

2. Teams may not release any players following their final game of the season, except in the final export of the year (the CFL Bowl). [/quoteb476e5c]

I don't want to have to make cap cuts... :(

Hopefully I'll have another four game weeks before I have to worry about it. :P

Seeing as though most of my rookie mistakes this year relate to the salary cap, I am looking for a little advice.

What's the advantage to dropping players this year, as opposed to before training camp next year?

I thought that training camp was the key date for salary stuff.

Can someone elaborate as to when next year's salaries/bonuses hit the cap? Advantages to dropping at the end of this year?

Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the one before the CFL Bowl is where you can escape any draft pick penalty

The advantage, I believe, is that the cap hit for releasing a player occurs this year and next year, as opposed to next year and the year after.

So, if you have a guy you know you want to cut in 2007, you can cut him now and the remainder of his bonus will only count against you in 2007.

If you cut him in 2007, then the cap hit will be on the books for 2007 and 2008.

So wouldn't most people want to spread the hit across two years instead of it accelerating to count in just one year? That's the kind of info I'm looking for though, if I cut a guy during FA next year, will it affect me differently then this year, other than the bonus acceleration to next year only.

The draft pick penalty explanation makes sense. But since I'm not over the cap I wasn't thinking about that angle.

Thanks gents.

Any other thoughts?

It depends. Some people want to get it done asap, and want the current year to count as one of those years so its off the books faster. Depends on the size of the contract I guess. Most people would want to spread out the hit on a guy with say a $7m bonus remaining (at values of $3m and $4m each year or whatever), but may cut immediately a guy with only a $1m bonus.

What's the deal with the draft picks and cutting guys?

Is it that if you cut a guy in 2007, you don't get to add more money to your rookie cap space?

:?

I think they were talking about losing a 3rd round pick for being over the cap...but I'm not sure

if that's what they're talking about, know that you lose 3rd round draft picks if you're over the cap at the end of FA, end of late FA, AND the end of training camp. So thats three times for your worst offenders. And if you get smart and trade away your 3rd round picks, you lose your 2nd rounders, etc.

Do we need to wait to the CFL bowl before sending it in or can we mark something as our last export?

I'm guessing that you'll have to wait until the CFL Bowl to send it in. Otherwise the game will probably mark it as "wrong stage" and not accept the export.

That presents a problem. Since the midweek is at 6am Tuesday, and the Bowl is that same evening, people might not have time to get exports in that contain their releases.

Maybe we should just let the cutting/signing thing be a free-for-all and not monitor it.

I think I made a mistake putting that in the Constitution. Makes it too complicated and is problematic for some owners due to timing. Although it is, in theory, a good rule, now I don't think the benefits outweight the costs and hassle.

I think Taco could make a one-time executive decision to suspend that rule in the Constitution until we can vote to make it permanent next season.

Just post a big notice, Taco, and I think that would be fine with everyone.

Maybe just a quick poll of playoff teams, who are the only one effected by it.

Good point, GI. Ok, here's my executive decision. Any owner can release players at any time. However, no team is allowed to sign the released players until next season. If a playoff team needs to sign a player (due to an injury to an existing player), they must sign a player who was not released by another team after the season ended. I don't anticipate any problems, but I'll glance at the transaction log after each stage to make sure everything is ok.

Let me know if anything is unclear or if anyone has concerns about this decision.

Can only playoff teams pick up dropped players? Wouldn't the dropped players be fair game for all teams in the league?

Well you could, but players will onl sign one year contracts and it will expire after the CFL bowl.
