In a press conference today, Las Vegas GM TurfToe had this to say:
We really gave the kid Talley every opportunity to earn a spot as the 3rd string QB. He just didn't have it in camp. He looked like he could make all of the throws but just couldn't execute very well. (QB Jon Talley went +2/-16 from pre-draft to post-camp)
We hit our 1st and 5th round picks (RG Pete Vince and FL Corwin Poole)just like we have in the past. The no-brainer selection of Vince looks to be paying off already as he steps in as our opening day starter. Poole was a nice surprise as he has just blossomed since we selected him at the draft. The best part is that he is already one of the guys and is clicking well with Jackpot, Feeney, and Hopkins.
(RG Vince went +3/+4 from pre-draft to post-camp while FL Poole went +16/+14)
Our secondary is still in need of help so our selection of LCB Brock Lyon was key. He's been able to learn from some of our vets but still needs some work before he can make an impact. He should be a contributor on special teams this year.
(LCB Brock Lyon went +3/-1 from pre-draft to post-camp)
Our even round picks seemed to be jinxed this year as our 2nd, 4th, and 6th round picks seemed to struggle all the way through camp. 2nd rounder, MLB Ricky Reardon, has been trying to run the front seven. Needless to say, between Comeau and Abdullah, there were some harsh words for the rook and some harsher contact. Reardon had a few setbacks with a hamstring and a torn rotator cuff. He'll make the team but will have to overcome these setbacks. 4th rounder, FS Ken Facey, has had trouble grasping a lot of the terminology we use. He's looked absolutely lost at times and may not be able to make the squad. We'll watch him hard in the preseason. 6th rounder, TE Marc Maxcy, has also struggled with some of the terminology and spent too much time with the trainer. Third year TE, Skip Barrett, broke Maxcy's nose on the first day of practice. We were told it was an accident but it somehow got broke again during our last week of camp. I'm not so sure that's a bad thing since Maxcy had his helmet on in both instances. We're quite excited about Barrett this year. If he doesn't knock Maxcy off the 53-man himself, Maxcy might just make this squad.
(MLB Ricky Reardon went +2/-7 from pre-draft to post-camp, FS Ken Facey went +1/-11, and TE Marc Maxcy went +1/-4)
We're still upset about the lack of interest from the free agent market this year but we're well aware of Tuscon's propaganda campaign. We'll make right on that transaction when we square off this year. We sent our love to gimpy Kent Eyles on the waiver wire and we'll be sure to introduce ourselves to the rookie, little Eddie Winters. Cheers Fonzie!
