Game Report: Death Valley 34, Atlantic City 9
Preseason Week 5
PLAYER OF THE GAME – QB Monty Lynch
It is official: Lynch is the opening day starter for Atlantic City. There never really was much doubt but Lynch had a strong outing versus Death Valley (8/14, 107 yds, 1 TD and a 105.3 QB rating) to seal the deal.
MISSING IN ACTION – QB Howie Boyd
Boyd, who was in a battle with Rico Firth for the backup QB spot, was horrible. How bad? How about 8/17 for 70 yards with 3 sacks, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble and an 8.5 QB rating. Even though Amos Bradford didn’t see any playing time in the preseason, he has a large upside that makes 3 QB’s on the roster. The question is do the Phantoms keep 4 QB’s?
WHAT IF . . .
I know, it is preseason and we have been avoiding the what ifs, but this week was a huge what if. Atlantic City missed an extra point, gave up a pick 6 and twice gave Death Valley incredible field position to start a drive (ACI 10 and 13). You can’t turn the ball over against an excellent team.
IF YOU MISSED IT
• TE Carlos Polhemus saw his first extended action and caught 6 passes for 59 yards. With TE Myron Learned a healthy scratch, we still haven’t seen these two play together.
• Neither team did much on offense, but on the flip side both defenses dominated the game. ACI allowed 233 yards while Death Valley only allowed 257 yards.
• With Sammy Bookas a clear loser in the punting battle to Jermaine Holmes, it looks like only 2 of the 4 ACI draft picks from 2037 will make the roster.
