All the marbles against the terrifying Ortiz. They our is pretty recognizable to me actually from the TFL where QB runs and reverses are the norm and their passing game is mostly high lows, we are gonna try to make them march down the field though, spy Ortiz and sit back in 2 high most of the game and hope our edges hold up in the run game. We feel okay about this bc on O we think their weakness t DE is gonna be a godsend for our own outside rushing and we changed very little other including our new OL configuration than taking out some short passes to Crabtree as he should be facing Taylor most of the time (anecdotally we almost took Taylor instead of DT Bradford and have regretted it ever since). And we can't forget the rainy weather that should help us contain their downfield passing but who knows really...

Former Sodbuster Schulz and RB Ellingsen get YAC to get them to our 8 quickly and Ortiz runs it in. We grind and dink our way to 3 3rd down conversions and the run game gets us inside their 10 but Crabtree drops the 3rd down pass with T Horner leaving the game (will have to see what the AI does to our OL on the next possession). Our rush helps force a 3andO. Looks like they've put in RG Brown at RT while the normal RT is playing at RG which isn't the worst outcome. We can't find Crabtree on 2 downfield throws and go 3andO ourselves. But a roughing the K call gives us new life, they stuff us on 3rd and 2 but another defensive personal foul moves it again and Mitchem finds Fence for the score to open the 2nd Q with a missed XP.

Ellingsen rips off 30 on a short pass but we tackle TE Schulz short in the orange zone and they opt to kick and get the 1 point lead. Back to the grind and dink O for us with Holzer banging up his hand. Our Ol gets called for a penalty but a Holzer screen makes up for it with Crabtree snagging one on the 1 yard line and backup WR Sigest getting banged up as well however we knock it in regardless. TE Schulz is killing us this time grabbing another 3rd down YAC chunk and is up to 4/4 for 55 but hey go to the well once too much and we pick Ortiz witha nice runback. Fence bails us out on 3rd and 10 and we are also going ot the TE way more than usual with Robertson at 5 targets and 4 catches so far and Fence grabs another TD on 3rd and long in the RZ. 1 minute drill for Ortiz and he finds WR Hindman for 54 air yards right off the start and Ellingsen takes an underrneath route the rest of the way with a bad hold causing the missed XP.

They ahve scored way too easy when they do so but we look better down to down. They are averaging 11 yards per play but it is very boom and bust while our methodical machine is getting it done on 3rd.

Failed completion to Fence on another 3rd and long and we get a net 65 yard punt to pin them. Ellingsen gets back to back 20 yard gains on the ground but they peeter out at midfield and kick it away. We lose 6 on an edge run and that leads to another failed completion on 3rd for us. They move it some but we tackle them short on 3rd and 2 and they opt ot go for it on 4th and 1 at their own 37 but we sniff out the screen and take over in FG range. We can't convert a 3rd and 3 on the ground and safely grab the 3 points to make it a 10 point game. Ellingsen is running reverses and gets a 1st but then gets taken down for a big loss and we get them off the field quickly. We go downfield 3 times to try to ice this thing but can't connect. Our D holds up though and neither O is having an easy time now but that clock is barely moving. Crabtree wakes up to help us convert a 3rd and 10 to close out the 3rd Q.

But Sedrick Flowers gets consecutive hurries to end our threat. DUR fumbles hte PR but they jump on top of it Ortiz misses downfield but our top CB Nixon comes up with a groin injury and the reverse doesn't work on 3rd and 3 for DUR as we are recognizing that playcall now. Anotherr 3nadO as we just can't get 2 good runs ina aseries but our P booms one 72 yards OOB at the DUR 1. Ellingsen is just torching us as they move it out of their end and we get a personal foul to get them to midfield. We sniff out another reverse and Ortiz can't scramble enough on 3rd adn forever and they opt to punt with 7 minutes left. We go into clockkilling mode and get 4 plays off to bring the clock down to near 4 minutes with DUR taking over at their 7. TE Schulz gets yet another YAC chunk but the clock is runnign and both Craig and Hindman drop bombs and they opt to kick the FG at the 2M mark facing a 4th and 1 at our 25 to make it a 7 point game. They kick deep and we can't do more than force them to use their TOs. A poor punt means they take over at their 41 with 1:17 left. Ortiz hits 2 downfield passes to get them to our 31 with 31 ticks left and they spike it. But DUR gets burned by the QB scramble in the hurry up so is left with one play at our 29 but the long pass gets batted down.

Our O was just putrid on an per play basis not topping 5 ypa at any depth but quite good on 3rd and the RZ mostly via late bloomer Fence. We had 1 20 yard gain on a screen to Holzer early and no other real chunks witih less than 2 YAC7catch overall. Our punting net 48.1 and the one TO helped us more than can be measured as well.

Ellingsen just embarassed us throughout the game and soemthing will have to be done this offseason about our edge defense against these elusive RBs but the general D GP was solid and effective at keeping Ortiz and the receives in front of them as they went 7/21 for 151 downfeild and no meaningful scrambles.

GG Steel and great season, reckon you will be back with Ortiz a couple more times at least.

Great game, Ushi. Like you mentioned, the two defensive penalties for first downs killed us, as you scored a TD on that drive. We then had an inexcusable Belichick type call, where we went for it from our own end on 4th down, got stopped for a loss, and you ended up getting an easy field goal out of that.

All in all, can't complain about what happened this season. We lost three players from our front four, and I thought it would be a struggle to go deep in the playoffs because of it. However, we managed to overcome the numerous amount of young players we had playing, and given everyone on this offense should return next year with another year of cohesion, I'm hoping we can be right back here.

Tough game and congrats to the Sodbusters!

The Bulldogs gave up two costly penalties extending a key Fargo drive and the Sodbuster D managed to pick one off of Ortiz. Fun game to watch as Durham had a chance to tie it at the end but ran out of time. Brooklyn understands Durham's frustration.

Cheers and good luck to all next season,
Dean

Congrats, Ush! It looks like Devan Mitchem was the final ingredient . . . lol.
