I have a player who has a current salary of 2,000,000. His current bonus is 20,000.
This means he hits my cap for 2,020,000 this season.
When I click on negotiate salary I see the following:
His above numbers under the current salary/bonus headers.
On the right side of the negotiate window, I see that he is requesting a 670,000 signing bonus and a 2-year contract at 830,000 the first year and 1,050,000 the second year. Next to the first year under the cap cost column I see 1,180,000. I figure this as his current contract's 20,000 bonus plus his new year 1 salary of 830,000 plus 1/2 of his new signing bonus (670,000 as indicated above).
My question is this: Does the new cap cost for the current year (1,180,000) hit my cap "instead of" or "in addition to" the cost he has already hit my cap with? My thinking is that the current year bonus hitting the cap in addition to the new contract detail should be the only impact on the cap. So, I would realize a savings this year of 840,000 (Currently 2,020,000 negotiated to 1,180,000 in the first year of the new 2-year deal). Right?
I'm trying to correct some strange contract situations and I could use some validation of my logic before I proceed.
Thanks in advance!
