Favorite week of the year and we are up against HON. We are bringing back our pass pro focused LT as the rookie future sensation got banged up and downfield TE Curson rejoins the squad after being out for a good bit. Nothing too unusual for us on the O GP and on D we are still down to 1 boundary CB so we will try to keep Cason on Sword as we learned a few seasons back that if double against Hemingway he will tear you up. A bit concerned about our lighter boxes holding up against their running game especially to the right side and we opted not to Spy much but that may end up hurting us a few times. Below freezing and still winds at kickoff...the vet X Sigrest grabs a slant in stride for 35 but coughs up the ball and HON comes up with it. We manage to stone them on a 3rd and 1 just outside of FG range but a big loss on a spread run leads to a failed complete on 3rd. HON finds the right edge we were worried about to get across midfield and continue to punish us in the trenches and Hemingway dances his way a TD on 3rd down. 3andO as TE Hiller gets targeted twice, a penalty nearly derails HON but Sword converts a 3rd and 12 on his 1st target of the game. We get another 3rd and short stop in the orange zone and it's Sigrest who gets us our 1st 1st down of the day. We finally start running to get into FG range and nudge it into the RZ but no further for 3 points. Hemingway tries WR Boyles downfield on 3rd down but S Anastasiades continues his great campaign and gets in front of hte pass to have us take over at their 34. The happiness is shortlived though as LB SHeasley rips the ball from Johnstones' hands and they scoop it up all the way for a 76 yard FR TD. It aint coming easy but Johnstone is moving the sticks on 3rd down all the way down to their 33 but then he throws a wobbler and S Thatcher steps in front for a 92 yard INT return TD. 2M drill for us, RIce who was quiet last week rips off 37 on a short pass to get us started but the pass rush conitnues to be a problem and we get just the 3 points. Not to be outdone Wr Boyles also rips off 30+ on a short pass but HON runs outta time and misses the long FG to end the half. Teams are pretty even on a per play basis with neither being overwhelming but good 3rd down conversions. Of course the 160+ TO return yards are the difference and it's significant as HON holds a 15 point advantage. HON has 6 passes defensed and the INT on just 25 dropbacks for us so our receivers will need to step up getting open if we are to have a chance. Hemingway dodges the pressure on 3rd but comes up a yard shy and new PR Fouse loses the PR but manages to fall on top of it. Similar outcome for us as we come up a yard short on 3rd down. A penalty has HON start at their own 5 and we stuff their runs to take over at midfield. Burner Donaldson can't hold on to a deep shot but then we get to dinkign and dusting only to come up 1 yard shy once more on 3rd down in the RZ and opt to kick unfortuantely to make it a 12 point game with 20 minutes left. Huge return sets HON up at our 35, a big sack on 3rd down knocks them out of FG range and Hemingway loses the ball but HON recovers. A hold negates a nice run off the left side but we get it back on a TE screen for 34 and are edging towards FG range but we try a run on 3rd and 6 and end up getting pushed outta FG range. HON tries a couple deep shots to ice the game but can't connect so we take over with 12 minutes left needing 2 TDs. Slot man Sasaki gets his first catch of the day to get us across midfield and has another grab later to set up 1st and goal form the 10 but once again we can't execute in the RZ and pretty much meaninglessly get 3 points to remain down 9 with 9 minutes left. We get the 3andO but HON booms a 61 net yard punt so we will have to 91 yards. We should be in the hurry up now and going downfield mostly although there are 7 minutes left and yea its a bit miscalibrated as we are going too deep for the situation and then throw a flat route on 4th and 8 so HON takes over at our 10 and Sword plunges into the endzone to ice the game at 27-12 with 6 minutes left. Great game HON, the per play numbers look abysmal but we came at you with everything that's worked all season for us and your D just wouldn't break and your O played great situational football all the same. Will be rooting for you to finish the job as I've liked what you've been doing the last half dozen seasons or so and of course rep the conference. |
