2074 CFL Midseason - Quarterback Efficiency Analysis

Report Overview

Comprehensive statistical analysis of all quarterbacks with 50+ passing attempts through Week 8 of the 2074 season. Rankings based on Adjusted Net Yards Per Attempt (ANY/A), which accounts for passing efficiency, sack impact, and turnover costs.

Methodology

Primary Metrics:
  • ANY/A (Adjusted Net Yards Per Attempt): (Pass Yards - Sack Yards + 20×TD - 45×INT) / (Attempts + Sacks)
  • Passer Rating: NFL standard formula
  • TD:INT Ratio: Touchdown-to-interception ratio
  • Sack Rate: Sacks / (Attempts + Sacks)
  • Y/A: Yards per attempt
  • Cmp%: Completion percentage

Tier 1: Elite Efficiency (ANY/A > 10.0)

1. Reginald Jacobs - Los Angeles Outlaws
219 Att | 135 Comp | 1,970 Yds | 18 TD | 8 INT
  • ANY/A: 10.61 | Rating: 106.0 | Y/A: 9.00
  • Cmp%: 61.6% | TD Rate: 8.2% | INT Rate: 3.7%
  • Sack Rate: 6.4% | Rush: 16-71-0
Analysis: League-leading efficiency metrics across the board. Highest Y/A (9.00) and TD rate (8.2%) among qualified starters. Strong decision-making with 2.25:1 TD:INT ratio. Takes manageable sacks despite high yards-per-attempt. Limited sample size (219 attempts) compared to other top QBs

2. Garrett Ward - San Antonio Stingers
287 Att | 180 Comp | 2,306 Yds | 22 TD | 7 INT
  • ANY/A: 10.57 | Rating: 111.7 | Y/A: 8.04
  • Cmp%: 62.7% | TD Rate: 7.7% | INT Rate: 2.4%
  • Sack Rate: 2.0% | Rush: 24-83-2
Analysis: Remarkable turnaround from 2073 (29 INTs, 54.0 rating). Outstanding 22:7 TD:INT ratio with best sack rate in league (2.0%). High TD production combined with exceptional ball security. Statistically nearly identical to Jacobs in overall efficiency.

3. Clay Rowan - Kansas City Storm
450 Att | 293 Comp | 3,761 Yds | 27 TD | 7 INT
  • ANY/A: 10.12 | Rating: 112.4 | Y/A: 8.36
  • Cmp%: 65.1% | TD Rate: 6.0% | INT Rate: 1.6%
  • Sack Rate: 6.1% | Rush: 26-127-2
Analysis: Volume leader with 450 attempts while maintaining elite efficiency. Exceptional 27:7 TD:INT ratio. Highest passer rating in league. Proves elite efficiency is sustainable at high volume. Most complete statistical profile when combining production and efficiency.

League-Wide Observations

Distribution of Efficiency
  • Elite (>10.0 ANY/A): 3 QBs (8.3%)
  • Very Good (8.0-10.0): 3 QBs (8.3%)
  • Above Average (6.5-8.0): 9 QBs (25.0%)
  • League Average (5.5-6.5): 3 QBs (8.3%)
  • Below Average (4.5-5.5): 8 QBs (22.2%)
  • Poor (<4.5): 2 QBs (5.6%)
  • Insufficient Data (<200 att): 8 QBs (22.2%)
Key Trends

1. Top-Heavy Elite Performance
Three QBs (Jacobs, Ward, Rowan) have separated themselves with 10+ ANY/A. This represents exceptional efficiency rarely seen league-wide. All three feature high TD rates (6.0%+) and strong ball security.

2. Turnover Differential Matters
The six QBs with negative or 1:1 TD:INT ratios all rank in bottom third of efficiency. Turnovers remain the strongest predictor of poor QB play.

3. Volume vs Efficiency
Clay Rowan proves elite efficiency is sustainable at high volume (450 attempts, 10.12 ANY/A). However, several high-volume QBs (Reid 299 att, Frederick 253 att) struggle with efficiency.

4. Sophomore Slumps and Breakouts
  • Ward's turnaround (+8.61 ANY/A) shows dramatic improvement is possible
  • Reid's collapse (-7.14 ANY/A) demonstrates elite performance isn't guaranteed to continue
  • Small sample 2073 performers (Kaesviharn, Tripp) have regressed toward mean
5. Sack Rate Impact
Hughes (9.6% sack rate) and Willis (7.5% sack rate) show how protection issues can tank otherwise competent QBs. Conversely, Ward (2.0%) and Norgard (2.4%) benefit significantly from clean pockets.

6. The Dual-Threat Advantage
Ruth (3 rush TDs), LaPointe (35-192-2), Hemingway (23-175) demonstrate QB rushing adds scoring value, particularly in goal-line situations.

7. TD Rate as Efficiency Predictor
The top 5 TD rate leaders (Jacobs 8.2%, Ward 7.7%, Fryday 6.8%, Ruth 6.4%, Rowan 6.0%) all rank in top tier efficiency. Conversely, Bey (1.5%) and LaPointe (2.3%) struggle with low TD rates.

Matchup Implications

Most Dangerous QBs (ANY/A > 8.0)
Facing these QBs requires premium game planning:
  • Reginald Jacobs (LAO) - 10.61 ANY/A
  • Garrett Ward (SA) - 10.57 ANY/A
  • Clay Rowan (KC) - 10.12 ANY/A
  • Timothy Ruth (TUC) - 8.66 ANY/A
  • Kai Johnstone (FAR) - 8.31 ANY/A
  • Kirk Fryday (ATL) - 8.18 ANY/A
Exploitable QBs (ANY/A < 5.0)
Defenses should have success against:
  • Kaden Bey (DV) - 3.26 ANY/A
  • Johnny Reid (NO) - 3.84 ANY/A
  • Tim Grenda (ORE) - 4.57 ANY/A
  • Manuel Kerby (IOW) - 4.62 ANY/A
High Variance QBs
These QBs can hurt you or help you depending on turnover luck:
  • Kirk Fryday (ATL) - High TDs (26) but high INTs (14)
  • Bart Marsh (ALA) - Explosive (7.70 Y/A) but 11 INTs
  • Peter Frederick (MIA) - Negative TD:INT ratio (9:12)

Methodology Notes

ANY/A Formula:
(Passing Yards - Sack Yards + 20×Touchdowns - 45×Interceptions) / (Pass Attempts + Sacks)

Why ANY/A?
  • Accounts for sack impact (yards lost + lost play)
  • Values TDs appropriately (+20 yards worth ~1.4 expected points)
  • Penalizes INTs heavily (-45 yards worth ~-3.0 expected points)
  • Strong historical correlation with team success
  • Better predictor than passer rating for team wins
Sample Size Considerations:
QBs with <200 attempts should be evaluated cautiously. Small samples can produce extreme efficiency metrics (both positive and negative) that may not be sustainable. QBs like Tyler (125 att), Corbin (142 att), and Van Pelt (174 att) show strong efficiency but lack volume validation.
