Rate your 2004 Draft Class.

It's been 3 seasons since the 2004 draftees were selected. I thought that it would be kind of fun to revisit these draftees and see how they're doing today. Feel free to grade yourself as needed. Here is Shreveport's '04 draft class:

[bf2d79ca]1.08 - LCB Brady Scott, Penn State[/bf2d79ca] - Brady is an utter and complete failure. He is currently serving out the term of his contract as a punt returner/dime back for the Pride. On weekdays, he dresses up as our mascot and walks down the street holding a sign that says "Feel the Pride! Get Tix, Call (800)555-7743" [color=redf2d79ca]Grade: F[/colorf2d79ca]

[bf2d79ca]2.21 - FS Louie Reed, North Carolina[/bf2d79ca] - Louie Reed is an excellent backup to Shuck and Saleh and contributes significantly on special teams. All in all, I don't think that the story is over for Reed. He's got a lot of potential left to live up to and I believe that he can do it. I would have liked Louie to be good enough to start by now. [color=redf2d79ca]Grade: C[/colorf2d79ca]

[bf2d79ca]3.21 - RDE Scottie Berosik, South Carolina[/bf2d79ca] - Scottie is still developing. He had a good rookie campiagn, scoring 4 sacks, but has been a disappointment since. He still has a little potential and fits in well as a backup defensive end. [color=redf2d79ca]Grade: C[/colorf2d79ca]

[bf2d79ca]5.21 - P Alan Solwold, Temple[/bf2d79ca] - Alan is a decent player for the Pride. Although his kicks don't have much hang time or distance, he has been consistent at landing them inside the 20 when he needs to. My problem is that I spent a fifth round pick on a kicker. Horrible. Just Horrible. [color=redf2d79ca] Grade: D[/colorf2d79ca]

[bf2d79ca]6.21 - WLB Rondell Talley, Bucknell [/bf2d79ca]- Rondell really looked like he could be a 3rd down linebacker, coming in for pass rush situations. Unfortunately when he's been given the opportunity, he's done nothing with it. He is struggling to be a good backup and will never be a starter. [color=redf2d79ca]Grade: C[/colorf2d79ca]
[bf2d79ca]
7.21 - LG Everett Knight, Nevada [/bf2d79ca]- Usually it's pretty nice when you can find a starter in the 7th round. Unfortunately for the Pride, it only speaks to the quality of guards that we have on the team. Knight had an excellent 2005 season and won the starting job for 2006. Unfortunately Knight had a tendency to give up sacks in 2006. He'll make an excellent backup, which is why he was drafted. Overall he has exceeded my expectations. [color=redf2d79ca]Grade: A[/colorf2d79ca]

[bf2d79ca][color=redf2d79ca]Overall Grade for Shreveport's 2004 Draft: D[/colorf2d79ca][/bf2d79ca]

Only one prospect panned out and I'm still waiting on two others. The big reason that I score myself so low is that I traded away a 4th rounder in addition to 1.21 to get to 1.08 to pick Brady Scott who has been a huge disappointment. When you make a move up to a top ten pick you need to do better than getting a dime back/punt returner.

[bed85163]1.4 RB Butch Fulton, American Interntl[/bed85163]
Butch has run for 3,519 yards in his 3 seasons starting in Tulsa. He has missed 6 games due to injury, but still has put up solid numbers. Out of the # 4 pick in the draft you would expect a higher yard per carry but really he is the only production on the Tulsa offense. I give this pick a [bed85163]B+[/bed85163]

[bed85163]1.31 WR Daniel Campbell, Texas- El Paso [/bed85163]
Campbell has 1,016 yards and 4 TDs- great stats for a season, but it has taken him 3 years to get those numbers. Campbell looks like he will never be anything more than a # 3 reciever...This was a reach pick during the draft, and it has shown. I give this pick a [bed85163]D[/bed85163]

[bed85163]2.2 NT Vince George, Buffalo State[/bed85163]
Vince started just about every game in his first two seasons and really did not show a lot of production on the field, so he was benched this season in favor of Jessie Sherman. It is rumored the Talons are switching back to the 4-3, go George might have another chance to prove he was worth this high of a pick. I give this pick a [bed85163]C-[/bed85163]

[bed85163]2.28 CB Otis Ames, California[/bed85163]
Ames has started only 12 games in his 3 seasons with Tulsa- he has 0 INTs, but he has piled up quite a bit of tackles. Ames was sapposed to be brought in to compete for a starting job, but now he is competing for the # 4 CB spot. Another bad pick- grade- [bed85163]D[/bed85163]

[bed85163]4.2 DE RJ Stokes, Illinois[/bed85163]
Stokes has been a backup DE for his 3 years here, in that time he has started 18 games and has put up solid #s. Stokes could turn out to be a starter in this league. I give this pick a [bed85163]B+[/bed85163]

[bed85163]7.2 QB Kent Back, Michigan State[/bed85163]
Back has been the # 3 QB ever since he got here, and with the addition of Billy Joe Floyd last draft- it is believed Back will be cut soon. Back could be a good backup in the league, but he will never be starter material. Simply for making the roster 3 years in a row you have to give this pick a [bed85163]C[/bed85163]

I know there were some other picks but I dont know where to find them...those are the ones on my roster right now. Overall I give myself a [bed85163]C-[/bed85163] With the exception of Fulton no one in this draft turned out to be any good...Stokes could be, but only Fulton has produced so far.

edit with the picks i was missing...
4.4 TE Ernie Porter, Quincy University
Retired
4.23 C Shaun Mitkov, Michigan State
Retired
4.28 WR Harvey Ross, Tulane
Retired
6.2 SS Spencer Ballard
Retired
7.23 RB Doug Lassner
Free Agent

I would call that a REALLY bad draft, 3 of the 4 4th round picks are not even in the CFL anymore...

I think I got Sonkin from this draft and he's done fairly well. I give him a B

[b27ec850]1.01 DE Scott Flowers[/b27ec850]
Scott has shown some glimpses of greatness, but has really been hampered by injuries. He did not play a single down his rookie season and missed half of the games this year. As such, he hasn't played up to his full potential and really earned his money yet. The jury 's still out on this one.

[b27ec850]2.01 WR Irv Zukowsky[/b27ec850]
Every attempt to draft a receiver has resulted in failure for me and Irv was no exeption. He played 16 games in 2004 starting in 1, had less than average stats and was then cut in 2005. He never played another game in the CFL and has retired since.
[color=red27ec850]Grade: D-[/color27ec850]

[b27ec850]3.01 DT Richard Cassidy[/b27ec850]
The gem of this draft class for the Vampires. An instant boomer, Rich has started 45 games these last 3 years and really been an important part of the stingy Vampire defense of those past 2 seasons. This will probably be his last season in Detroit as I will not be able to afford him next year
[color=red27ec850]Grade: A-[/color27ec850]

[b27ec850]4.01 G Rob Jeffries[/b27ec850]
A decent guard, he started all 16 games his rookie season but has steadily lost playing time since then because of the overall improvement of the team. A very servicable backup, he could probably start for some other team.
[color=red27ec850]Grade : B[/color27ec850]

[b27ec850]5.01 P Billy Bob Thornton[/b27ec850]
A good prospect, but Billy Bob did not make the team after training camp. We tried trading him but found no takers. He was then picked up by Baltimore during the season and has been handling the punting duty for Denver these last 2 seasons.
[color=red27ec850]Grade: F [/color27ec850]for me since he didn't make the team, but the player deserves a B-.

[b27ec850]6.01 RB Jeffrey Threats[/b27ec850]
A decent backup to Wadsworth in his rookie season, he played very little in 2005 and was cut the following offseason. He has been picked up by Huntington Beach since and was their 3rd string RB in 2006.
[color=red27ec850]Grade: C-[/color27ec850]

[b27ec850]7.01 FB Lewis Scarbrough[/b27ec850]
Roster filler in 2004, cut in 2005, retired in 2006. Lewis has now gone back to his home town of Newton, NC and is now a plumber.
[color=red27ec850]Grade: D[/color27ec850]

[b27ec850]Overall:[/b27ec850]
2 starters, 1 solid backup. Overall, it was a pretty draft for the Vampires, of course it helped picking #1 every round...

[size=927ec850]note: this was not my draft, as I took ownership of the team right after it...[/size27ec850]

[b8e85770]1.17 DE Howie Grier – Stanford[/b8e85770]. He was drafted to get us some quality on the D-line, and he hasn’t disappointed. Our scouts initially thought he might have been overrated (his ratings dropped a bit after he was drafted), but he’s proved them wrong time and time again by steadily improving his game and has become a 3-year starter. Great against the run, and has shown some pass rushing skills, too (14.5 sacks in the last two seasons). I’m pretty pleased with this mid-1st round pick. [i8e85770]Grade: A-[/i8e85770]

[b8e85770]2.17 CB Steven Smalley – Wisconsin.[/b8e85770] Flop. We kept him on the roster for a year to soften the cap hit before cutting him. Out of the league. [i8e85770]Grade: F[/i8e85770]

[b8e85770]3.17 RB Daryl Bradley – Nebraska.[/b8e85770] Daryl is a very mixed bag – he was a one-year starter for us in 2005 and did well, rushing for 945 yards and another167 via the air. He was supplanted by stud RB Drew Holliday this year, and it appeared to affect Daryl mentally, as he put the ball on the ground a league leading 13 times despite his limited playing time. Still, when he wasn’t giving the ball away he was a reasonably productive backup/return guy, gaining 695 yards on the ground, 133 in the air, and 357 on returns. [i8e85770]Grade: C[/i8e85770]

[b8e85770]4.17 WR Donell Lee – Butler.[/b8e85770] Was drafted to provide WR depth and be a return guy. He had a reasonably successful rookie year, catching 23 passes for 291 yards with a TD, but got caught in a numbers game during his sophomore season and got cut last offseason. Spent 2006 on the Durham roster, seeing limited playing time as a return specialist. [i8e85770]Grade: D[/i8e85770]

[b8e85770]5.17. C Irving Schoreder.[/b8e85770] Drafted to be David Pless’ backup, and was a big ol’ bust. Out of the league: [i8e85770]Grade: F[/i8e85770]

[b8e85770]6.17. QB Brandon Moore.[/b8e85770] We hoped for a good backup for Hogan, but instead we got a big sack of wasted protoplasm. [i8e85770]Grade: F[/i8e85770]

[b8e85770]7.17. T Mikey Gibson.[/b8e85770] A longshot 7th rounder, didn’t make the cut. [i8e85770]Grade: F[/i8e85770]

Tucson's 2004 draft in review: We got one excellent starter, another semi-qualty backup, and a bunch of picks who are now out of football. Not terrible, but far from great. [b8e85770]Overall grade: C.[/b8e85770]

I have two picks left on my roster. Rayburn will be cut before the season starts... and the other guy is a backup. [color=red228988c]Grade = F[/color228988c]

Atlantic City Preview

1.25 - RT Tyrone McDonald - Lane

Tyrone has started all 48 games at RT since he was drafted. He has 38 KRBs in 127 opportunities and allowed 23 sacks. Not the best RT, but has been ok and will get one more year to see what he can do.
Grade: C

2.25 - LG Neal McIntyre - Morgan State

Neal has appeared in 41 games, with 39 of those being starts. 61 KRB in 165 opportunities, including 31 in '06. Has done a solid job at RG and is signed thru 2009.

3.4 - DT Russell Kadletz - Arkansas State

A pick I traded up to get (3.25 and 4.25 for 3.4 and 7.4), Russ has been an ok backup DT in both the 3-4 his 1st 2 years and the 4-3 last season. Probable cap casualty, still has potential for growth.
Career totals: 29 tackles, 19 assists, 2.0 sacks, 2 blocks, 9 hurries, 1 fumble recovery

Grade: D (have to get more production from an early 3rd rounder)

5.25 RB Bryant Youngblood - Cincinnati

Bryant has done nothing since he got here. Is a RFA, but will not be resigned.
Career totals: 10 GP, 2 car, 16 yards, 3 tackles

6.25 - DT Benjamin Beavers - Louisiana State

Benjamin has since retired after making only a small impact in 2004
Career totals - 6 GP, 4 tackles, 1.0 sack, 1 block, 1 hurry

7.4 - CB Steve Greer - Kentucky

Steve played well in a backup role in 2004, but has since retired as well
Career totals: 16 GP, 27 tackles, 8 assists, 2.0 sacks, 1 pass defended

7.25 DE Austin Farmer - Minnesota-Morris

Another guy who retired after one season
Career totals: 8 GP, 5 GS, 9 tackles, 3 assists, 2.0 sacks, 3 blocked, 3 hurries, 1 Forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Overall Grade: B- I picked up 2 starting OL in this draft, but the late round picks have not worked at all.
Grade: B+

[bd2d2b22]Boise 2004 Draft:[/bd2d2b22]
(I wasn't the GM at Boise so I will take this opportunity to harshly grade the draft performance of whoever was running the team at that point.)

[bd2d2b22]1.19 - Brenden Martinez RDT - Duke[/bd2d2b22]
Started 14 games this past season after the guy ahead of him on the depth chart had a season ending injury. On the whole he has made minor contributions and hasn't come very close to reaching his potential yet. He could end up being a serviceable d-lineman some day, but I expect a little more out of a first round pick.
[bd2d2b22]Grade: C-[/bd2d2b22]

[bd2d2b22]2.19 - Horace Lindsay RDE - Baylor[/bd2d2b22]
Started 13 games as a rookie and recorded 7.5 sacks that year. Started 7 games the following season. He has had problems staying healthy. He has pretty much reached his potential. He is currently a free agent and probably won't be in Boise when the 2007 season opens. Good production as a rookie and a decent player for a late second round pick. Ultimately drafting him didn't help the franchise much, however.
[bd2d2b22]Grade: B[/bd2d2b22]

[bd2d2b22]3.19 - Kevin Yeager SS - Mississippi State[/bd2d2b22]
Started 8 games as a rookie. He is currently a free agent and probably will not be back with the team. He made a decent reserve safety. Recorded 35 tackles, 2 interceptions and a sack in his 3 seasons in Boise.
[bd2d2b22]Grade: B-[/bd2d2b22]

[bd2d2b22]4.19 - Leroy Grafton LCB - Louisiana State[/bd2d2b22]
No hopes of ever being anything but a career backup. Only spent 2 years in Boise before moving on. Probably will not be in the league much longer.
[bd2d2b22]Grade: C-[/bd2d2b22]

[bd2d2b22]5.19 - Ricardo Cribbs LDE - Oregon[/bd2d2b22]
Spent one season in the CFL where he actually managed to play in 13 games and start 6. Recorded 8 tackles and 2 sacks in his brief career. You aren't usually going to get a superstar this late in the draft, but you'd like to get someone who can stay in the league a few years.
[bd2d2b22]Grade: D-[/bd2d2b22]

[bd2d2b22]7.19 - Bryan Walton C - Oklahoma State[/bd2d2b22]
Has appeared in 39 games as a backup center and long-snapper in his 3 years in Boise. He is an excellent long snapper. It's a success to get a contributor at this point in the draft, though Walton may have played his last game in the CFL.
[bd2d2b22]Grade: B[/bd2d2b22]

(Our 6th round pick ended up going to the Arizona Outlaws who took RB Randall Coleman out of Tennessee Martin. He has rushed for over 1500 as a backup, which is arguably better production than anyone we drafted.)

[bd2d2b22]Overall:[/bd2d2b22]
Not a great draft. Interestingly, the only offensive player we selected was C Bryan Walton in the 7th round, who primarily was a special teams contributor. Martinez looks to be a full-time starter in 2007, but without much hope that he will ever be a great player. All the others are gone or on their way out.
[bd2d2b22]Final Grade: D[/bd2d2b22]

[bd88c1b2]1.16 - DE Motormouth Vazquez, Grambling[/bd88c1b2]
Where do I even begin? There's been the rap career flop, the sports commentator flop, the series of wrong predictions, the consistent insistence that he's the greatest player to ever play the game, etc. On the field he has 14.5 career sacks in 3 seasons. This is the last year of his rookie contact and look out league: Motormouth probably will become an unrestricted free agent after this season! [color=redd88c1b2]Grade: B[/colord88c1b2]

[bd88c1b2]2.18 - LB Clifton Gideon, Florida State[/bd88c1b2]
Started 8 games his rookie season, but since then has been the backup to star Garth Dittman. He is now a disgruntled restricted free agent who may play elsewhere in 2007. [color=redd88c1b2]Grade: C[/colord88c1b2]

[bd88c1b2]3.18 - QB Kenneth Lester, Southern Methodist[/bd88c1b2]
Started 6 games as a rookie after I gave up on George "Pittbull" Pitts. Has developed nicely into a solid backup and I hope I can afford to keep him around long term. [color=redd88c1b2]Grade: A[/colord88c1b2]

[bd88c1b2]4.18 - RB Jerry Ackerman, Nebraska[/bd88c1b2]
Performed ok in his rookie year (3.8 yards/carry) but then regressed in his 2nd year (2.5 yards/carry) and was then released. Played in 12 games for Anchorage in 2006 (carrying the ball 4 times) and is now a free agent. [color=redd88c1b2]Grade: C[/colord88c1b2]

[bd88c1b2]5.18 - WR Floyd Banks, Mississippi[/bd88c1b2]
Retired. Had a short, uneventful career in Durham. [color=redd88c1b2]Grade: F[/colord88c1b2]

[bd88c1b2]7.18 - CB Deron Holliday, Louisville[/bd88c1b2]
Started 6 games in his first two years and played well, but then was a difficult cut prior to 2006. Tulsa picked him up and he started 2 games for them last year. He is now a restricted free agent. Overall, I think he is a good player for a mid-7th round selection at a position that has been in high demand. [color=redd88c1b2]Grade: A-[/colord88c1b2]

[bd88c1b2][color=redd88c1b2]Overall Grade for Durham's 2004 Draft: C+[/colord88c1b2][/bd88c1b2]

Maybe Motormouth will have more production on another team. QB Lester was probably my best pick out of this draft, even though he was a last minute decision as the player I wanted (CB Sedrick Boyd) was taken two picks ahead by Albany.

This was the draft that immediately preceded my take over of Chicago in the early season that year. It looks like the team should get a C at best.

TE Alfred Morton was a big hit. He is a stud TE and was a 6th rounder.

My first rd SS has not played to potential but the jury is still out on him.

[b8d1e320]1.3 WR Tom Sonkin[/b8d1e320]
He was a reach at the #3 pick, but after the top two the draft was wide open. He struggled to find playing time his first two seasons, but in 2006 he finally earned a starting spot and led the Rockets in every receiving statistic. He looks to be a solid contributer for years to come.

Grade: B+

[b8d1e320]2.3 CB Jeffrey Dresslar[/b8d1e320]
He has started since day one and has become out best corner. He'll never pick off a ton of passes, bet he's very solid against the run and a hell of a hitter. In a league that values corners as highly as this one does, it's a great value to find a day one starter in the second round.

Grade: A

[b8d1e320]3.3 TE Lance Delgado[/b8d1e320]
Just before the draft Fargo snaked stud TE Delbert Lonergan from the Rockets, so we were in desperate need of a replacement. Delgado was the best TE available at the time, and started 25 games in his first two seasons. However, he was never able to put up anything better than mediocre receiving numbers, and stud TE Dane McCrae was brought in last free agent period and Delgado was relegated to backup.

Grade: C+

[b8d1e320]4.3 RB Terrell Keith[/b8d1e320]
Keith was a huge find for the Rockets, as we were very unsatisfied with the play of Stephen Metz. Keith got injured during his rookie preseason, so he missed the first half of the season. When he came back he was forced to split time with Metz, but still managed to rush for over 600 yards and four scores in nine games. The last two seasons Keith has rushed for over 1000 yards and 15 touchdowns. A great pickup in the fourth round.

Grade: A

[b8d1e320]5.3 RT Dexter Battle[/b8d1e320]
Was on the team for two seasons as a backup but never saw any playing time. He is now a free agent, sitting by the phone waiting for a team who need him.

Grade: F

[b8d1e320]6.3 QB Danny Rutter[/b8d1e320]
Backed up Ernest Lorenzo for a season and even managed to go 3-1 when Lorenzo was injured. However, when we selected Dustin Hayes the next season there was no room on the roster for him. No other team gave him a chance to show that his winning ways were not a fluke, and he has no retired, going back to school to get his MBA from SMU.

Grade: D+

[b8d1e320]7.3 TE Benjamin Dove[/b8d1e320]
Selected as an insurance policy in case Delgado didn't pan out, Dove never made the opening day roster. He has now gone back to his home town of Philadelphia and is selling insurance.

Grade: F

[b8d1e320]Overall[/b8d1e320]
We managed to get three starters at important positions and a solid backup out of this draft...not bad success. Even one of our failures, Rutter, was a winner for us. If we could draft like this every single time I would be a happy, happy GM.

Grade: B

[b413132c]1.2 Chad Oroumieh, LT, Florida St[/b413132c]
The Attack swapped places to grab what I hoped to be the anchor of my offensive line for the next ten years. Unfortunately, Oroumieh

I was in the league as the Santa Cruz GM during the 2004 draft, so here's my take on what I did. From what I remember, I had traded away some of my later draft picks to Arizona prior to the draft, so I had only 4 selections, but here we go:

[be9dfc89]
1.6 C Ethan Capoccia[/be9dfc89]
Capoccia was a stud when I drafted him and he still is one today. Definitely a key piece to the O-line in SCU now, as he has allowed only 8 sacks in 3 years, with a percent of 0.6 and a run block percent of 29.6 for his career.
[be9dfc89]Grade: A[/be9dfc89]

[be9dfc89]2.6 NT Nick McDougall[/be9dfc89]
Was somewhat of a reach pick as I needed some depth behind the 2 starters at DT. Didn't really pay off as he has played in only 8 career games with no tackles. His ratings show potential, so maybe he has a shot down the line.
[be9dfc89]Grade: D[/be9dfc89]

[be9dfc89]3.6 RB Monty Duggar[/be9dfc89]
Career backup at best. I wasn't sure that Forrest Powell was the answer at RB, and Dugger looked good enough to bring along with him. He's had his moments scoring TDs, but not an answer at RB. Its an OK pick looking back, but nothing special.
[be9dfc89]Grade: C[/be9dfc89]

[be9dfc89]4.6 FB Anthony Bailey[/be9dfc89]
Never played a game for Santa Cruz, has 7 career rushing yards, and doesn't looking like a good blocker.

A poor draft for Denver, just one player remaining on the roster

1.24 Don Gardner RG - B+
A day one starter, had a solid rookie season (34%KRB 3SA), followed by a sophomore dip (25%KRB 2SA). He was putting up great numbers in 2006 (48%KRB 1SA) before he was lost for the season in Week 8. Has been as good as expected, the only worry is that he is yet to complete a 16 game season.

2.24 Edwin Stoltenberg WR - E
Had a reasonable rookie year (25 catches, 4TD's), but was out of favour in 2005 and was in the final cuts in 2006. Picked up by Hartford.

3.24 Hugh Blackburn CB - E
Never made the expected impact in a position where we desperatly needed help. Was cut before 2006 season and is currently on Las Vegas roster.

4.24 Britt Griffith DE - F
Had potential but never made any sort of impact and let go after 2005 season. Spent 2006 at Chicago but never got on the field.

5.24 JC Blanchard FS - F
Moved to Corner but was cut berore 2005 season. Now retired from football.

6.24 Lawrence Elliot WR - E
Played a season, but was cut and now is on the Atlantic City roster

7.24 Darren Kallenberg T - F
Never made the roster.

We picked up as a rookie free agent G Renaldo Browning, who has turned into a solid backup deputising well for Gardner in 2006 (34% KRB)

The draft was terrible, but the pick of Gardner was the first thing i did as a GM in the CFL, so have quite a soft spot for him. Overall though my draft is a D-.
