"Not bad for a bunch of old farts and has-beens," laughed Boxcar Center Steven Odom as he smacked the 450 sign dead on with a smooth stroke at the Golden Rail Pitch 'n' Putt out by the Fargo Lagoons. Odom was refering to the Maroon and Maize's 12-4 2010 season, which surprised even the most diehard fans. "But not good enough. We have a couple guys here with rings. Former Six Packs, yeah. Tony [Straight] here is always showing his off."

The quarterback laughed sheepishly, preparing his shot, "Uh huh. Clipboard holder extraordinaire for the Charleston Six Packs. They couldn't wait to get Landon [Hurst] back on the field. I was almost lynched down there in Carolina."

As his shot dinged against the cleanup cart, he growled, "Another interception. Damn!"

Slapping his partner on the back with a force that would topple a less athletic man, the burly 300 pounder replied sagely, "Don't worry, we'll keep [Starting QB Brett] Hedges alive this season. Polish up that clipboard, son."

They could afford to laugh. As two seasoned veterans of the CFL, Odom and Straight are virtual locks to make the 2011 version of the Boxcars. But as usual with the league's oldest team, many personnel questions remain.

In a move that shocked the fans, General Manager Paolo Luxx traded away their best young player, wide receiver Ernie Cooley to Cleveland. But in the locker room, the news was almost expected.

"Man, it was like a little minidrama or something," opined Elias Alvey, the Boxcars halfback, "Cools [Cooley] and Hedges were like, what's the saying? Like Oil n' Vinegar [sic] or somethin'. But, it's Cools. He's a competitor. Know what I'm sayin'? He got to have the ball. But, see? Hedges, he's like, 'Well muthaf**ka just get open an you'll get the muthaf**kin' ball, see?' It went on like that. An' I'm just like, 'Yo, shut yo muthaf**kin mouth and play football.' But see, that didn't go down with Cools. Oh, no. And my boy Eugene [WR Gene Wold], he's like catchin' everything in sight! Where you at, Cools? But it's all good, see? He already lovin' Cleveland, man. I talk to him the other day at my fundraiser for the kids. It's all good. Fargo be fine. No doubt. Quote me here."

"Ernest is a competitor. Eli is dead on," Hedges smiled calmly as he listened to his teammate and thoughtfully replied, "But I think that Coach Tyworth and Mister Luxx have made a statement that no one is bigger than the team. We'll miss Cools. But we have to look forward. None of us are getting any younger. Except Rufus, of course."

Rufus. The Boxcars' ageless fullback. Unlike parting stars Daniel Braddy, Carlton Seidel, Seth Keller, Miquel Haith, and David Mathis, Ecklund erased all doubts of his retirement plans with a massive off-season bash at his ranch out in Prairie Rose. The highlight of the fete was a roast of the big retiring left tackle Braddy, who'd been the anchor of the 2010 Boxcars offensive line. (In exchange for an invite to the party, we promised not to repeat some of the commentary from the podium, but the remarks of Hedges, who's backside Braddy had successfully protected, were unusually and entertainingly off-color for the normally straight-laced born again Christian.)

"Raise the Roof!" Ecklund shouted during an announcement in the midst of the festivities. Holding up his ring finger he shouted, "See this? This is where the ring goes. Ring me, Boxcars! Right here! One more year!" Then holding up his middle finger, he continued, each sentence met with rousing replies from the crowd, "See this? This is for the doubters. You know who I mean. They say we can't do it. We're too old. Alvey can't run no more. [LB James] Silver can't tackle no more. [S Noble] McLane can't cover no more. Tyworth can't coach. Luxx is crazy. And Ecklund ain't no All League Fullback. See this? That's what this finger is for!"

Should be an interesting season in Fargo.
