Post subject:  CFL Rookie Watch - L

CFL Rookie Watch will visit various teams around the league (as long as others participate) to check in on rookies trying to achieve their CFL dreams and catch on with a CFL franchise.

This edition of CFL Rookie Watch visits the Las Vegas Rounders defensive backfield and puts rookie CB Bob Harmon under the microscope.

Player: Bob Harmon
Team: Las Vegas Rounders
Position: Defensive Back
Draft Status: Undrafted Free Agent
Height/Weight: 5' 10" 178 lbs.
School: Kentucky

Harmon's skills worth mentioning are his run, man-to-man, and bump and run defense. While he has moderate skills in other areas of his game, these are the ones providing him an opportunity to make a CFL 53-man roster.

[uaeae00f][baeae00f]Exhibition Week 1[/baeae00f][/uaeae00f]

Harmon saw significant time in Vegas' first exhibition game against the freshly relocated Omaha Monitors. Seriously? Omaha Monitors? That's another blog entirely and we hope it gets fixed soon. Bob saw 22 run plays and 44 pass plays this week. With Dana Thomason starting at the opposite corner, it was obvious he would see plenty of action. Even after Thomason's early exit, the Monitor's continued to attack Harmon's side of the field. Despite a hand injury suffered during the game, Harmon led the team with 11 tackles and contributed with 2 assists. We spoke briefly with GM TurfToe who was not entirely impressed with the high number of tackles and added, "Harmon's large number of tackles needs to be put into context. While he had a decent day defensively with 1 pass defensed and a forced fumble...this kid can hit by the way, don't let his size fool you...11 tackles is not hard to come by when you had 10 catches to your credit. 10 catches? That's almost a cuttable offense rght there. That's a lot, even for a rookie."

TurfToe also touched on Harmon's one kick return for 21 yards and commented that he took the hit and held onto the ball, which can be difficult for young guys being exposed to the size and speed of the CFL game. It appears as though Harmon's hand injury is not serious enough to limit his play but he will likely be inactive next week when the other rookie CB, Zach Jordan, gets his turn to impress the Vegas coaching staff.

We caught up with Bob Harmon after the game and he had this to say about his first CFL game action, "It was fun competing with other guys. You can only have so much fun hitting your teammates day in and day out. I knew the game would be faster, even faster than training camp, but it was still pretty f'ing fast. I think I held up well though. I knew I would get a lot of attention as a rookie corner so I just put my head down and went to work. I am willing to sacrifice my body to fulfill my football dreams and I think the Monitors know I'm for real. That Flethcer dude, number 87, was talking shit all game and when he ran his route over the middle late in the fourth I knew I had my shot to make an impression. Based on the noise he made, I think that impression was made. I knew I would either knock the ball loose or break the dude's arm because I hit him with everything I had. The highlight of my night though was meeting Herb Welborn. My teammates have been giving me crap all camp about my Welborn Approved t-shirt I always wear under my pads. I've been wearing it since I was a sophomore and I was pretty jacked about meeting him and showing him my shirt."

We think Harmon has a decent shot at making this squad and could do well with this young and exciting Vegas secondary. If we had to put money on it we'd say he was on the bubble, but on the inside of the bubble looking out. Good luck Bob, we'll catch up with you in a later edition of CFL Rookie Watch.

Next stop is San Antonio, where a large crop of promising rookies is hoping to make a quick turn around for the rebuilding Stingers.

[uaeae00f][baeae00f]Exhibition Week 2[/baeae00f][/uaeae00f]

This edition of CFL Rookie Watch visits the Las Vegas Rounders WR corps and puts rookie WR Hugh Allen under the microscope.

Player: Hugh Allen
Team: Las Vegas Rounders
Position: Flanker
Draft Status: Undrafted Free Agent
Height/Weight: 5' 10" 190 lbs.
School: Clemson

Allen was a productive member of Clemson's pass happy offense, however, he was not considered as pro-ready as many of his peers. Allen's route running, third down catching, and big play receiving skills are enough for him to land a spot in the CFL. In Vegas' pere-season Week 2 contest against the Hartford Attack, Allen led the Rounders with 5 catches (10 targets, 0 drops) for 127 yards (25.4 ypc, 2 20+ catches) with 24 yards after the catch. We're hoping to catch Allen in the next couple of weeks with Dwight Terrell on the other side meaning even more looks for this undrafted free agent. He's one to watch during the rest of the pre-season.

[uaeae00f][baeae00f]Exhibition Week 4[/baeae00f][/uaeae00f]

Hugh Allen came back to earth with 1 catch for 4 yards but he only saw 7 snaps.

Bob Harmon had 7 more tackles and a forced fumble while allowing 4 catches. Harmon has all but secured the final DB spot for the Rounders.

[uaeae00f][baeae00f]Exhibition Week 5[/baeae00f][/uaeae00f]

Hugh Allen had 3 catches on 9 targets (2 drops) for 23 yards. Allen looks to be in line for the final WR spot should the Rounders keep more than 5 WR's.

Bob Harmon had 1 caught, 1 defensed, and 1 tackle in his final pre-season action. Rumor has it he will be on the Vegas 53-man roster after final cuts.

[uaeae00f][baeae00f]Week 1 - Tucson Toros[/baeae00f][/uaeae00f]

Harmon had 2 tackles while on the field for 47 plays. Of those 47 plays, 20 were pass plays in which Harmon had 1 catch against and no defenses or interceptions. considering the receiving corps of the Toros this could be called a successful day for the rookie. He recorded 0 tackles on 8 ST plays.

Grade: C

[uaeae00f][baeae00f]Week 2 - Boston Massacre[/baeae00f][/uaeae00f]

Harmon recorded 5 tackles (3rd most on the team) on 37 plays. 20 of those 37 were pass plays where Harmon had 2 catches against with 0 defenses/interceptions. Still no ST tackles with 7 more ST play opportunities.

Grade: B+

[uaeae00f][baeae00f]Week 3 - Hunting Beach Capitalists[/baeae00f][/uaeae00f]

Harmon is lost for the year with an ACL injury. The club was starting to get excited about this undrafted free agent but his balls-to-the-wall mentality put his body in harm's way. It seems funny to say it but we are hoping this guy makes a full recovery and can contribute next season.
