So.. I think I know how this works, but I want to make sure..

If I trade someone, I take a cap hit on their bonus and the person receiving them only pays their base salary, right?

So.. I trade a guy who looks like this:

Current Salary: 2 mil Current Bonus: 1 mil
2007 Salary: 3 mil 2007 Bonus: 1 mil

I'm taking a cap hit for the 2 mil in bonus and the other team pays him 2 mil this year and 3 mil next... right?

I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure it works the way you described it.

shouldn't it be the same as if the player had been released?

If you release that player today, my understanding is that you get hit with his current year bonus this season, and the rest of his contract year's bonuses are accelerated to next season. In your case, you'd take a hit of 1M this season, and 1M next season. At least that's how I always understood how bonuses were handled when a player left your team... I may be wrong though...

Yeah.. that's basically what I thoguht, I did not flesh out the detail of how the hit would happen because.. oh yeah, cause i'm lazy...

hehe, yeah for that one example, it wouldn't make a bidg difference, but let's say you have a player with 3 or 4 years left on his contract. That could hurt you just a bit this year, then boom to the jugular next season
