If I want to trade a guy who had an expired contract but I resigned during early FA, is that legit? Is it a bit of a dick move even if legal?

Not talking about the RFAs.

Trading Rules

Conditional trades are prohibited.

Draft picks that are not available in game cannot be traded.

The Trade Deadline is when the week 9 Sim is complete after that no more trades are allowed.

Any player signed to a free agent contract (excluding restricted FA) may NOT be traded in the same year.

Drafted rookie players can be traded.

I fully understand the intent of this rule but it does present some problems.

What if I resign someone that was already on my team as a free agent, then land a replacement in the draft that I wasn't expecting?

Or one of the guys I just resigned is someone another owner wants to include to balance a trade and is not the primary/sole player targeted in that trade?

I just wanted to discuss this as there may be some cases where this rule overreaches even though it definitely prevents player brokering.

Is there even a way to modify this rule to prevent brokering and allow good faith trades? I'm not sure there is, but I wanted to discuss it.

Thoughts?

What prevents player brokering in the NFL? Not a rhetorical question, because I don't think there's any specific rule against it but you don't often see it happen if ever. But if we can figure out the answer to that maybe it can be applied to this.

I don't think I've ever had these issues, but stuff does come up and I hate to see someone with a legitimate case be hamstrung by a rule we had to put in place to prevent douchebaggery.

It's kind of like teaching new refs about targeting. It's hard to define with specific rule wording, but on the field, you will know it when you see it. It's difficult to legislate safety into the game without hamstringing players and unfortunately, some borderline calls have to be made. However, with the right verbiage, the obviously legit actions can, and should, be allowed.

I've hit my comma quota for the day so I'll stop here.

The rule is so you can't Player Broker, if you are resigning a player already on your roster it's good but if you are just picking players off the street to just turn around and trade, that is not allowed.

OK I will just stick to the letter of the rule, it leaves things very clear. Thanks for bringing up the discussion TT but it would be pretty difficult to judge these things case-by-case.

While in this case I ended up drafting similar players and I want them to get snaps I will admit to being tempted by player brokering in the past during rebuilds. The bonus money makes that pretty untenable if you are trying to contend however.
