Well here it is, hosting OMA in our first CFL Bowl.

OMA is another team with a dominant Z and Y as we have seen twice already in these playoffs. The big difference is that their Z is of another level completely and the supporting cast can not be ignored as much so we didn't end up doubling much though still plan on using a good bit of our Cover-3-Cloud coverage. Due to our Stud ILB Sutter being out with vision problems since the CC, we have moved pass rush extraordinaire Walsh back into WLB so that also prevents us from playing our C3C doubling the TE as we have done in the past a good bit. Also, Walsh is a 0 run defender and while OMA doesn't have a great running game we are a bit worried about them beating us on the left edge. Their OL does seem susceptible but I think cohesion has them playiing above level. They also target tehir RB anf FB a good bit which is something we have studied but do not have a definitive strategy to stop. The biggest difference though is that while our D has forced 2 INTs down the stretch in each of our past 2 games, Harrison is a top 5 at protecting the ball though so we will need a bit more on a per play basis for our D than we have seen these POs.

On O, we took a look at OMA roster and saw a lot of guys underweight in their 34 front as well as no rela top tier run defenders, combine this with their excellent tackling on short passes and we will be toting it 30 times minimum. Their performance by the team stats doesn't seem too bad though so this may end up being a costly error for us as I expect both teams to hit 30 points. OMA is a tough D to figure as they dorp 8 a lot but also will blitz and play a lot of single high so you never really know what you are going to get on a given play. We have played clean games the past 2 challenges and if that continues I like our chances.

Onto the game...

We offer little resistance as they get solid gains on 5 rushes and hit 2 intermediate passes to go up 7. We aren't nearly as smooth needing a couple 3rd and long conversions but tie things up in short order. OMA continues to break runs on the edge and hits a couple nice completions but stalls out in the RZ and we get the 3rd down pressure to force a FG. FAR QB Woodard takes a 1st down sack and gets his knee dinged up but Crabtree ails us out of another 3rd and long. Fulton catches them on a draw and gets us to their 11 and our patented RZ screen to Crabtree puts us up 4 early in the 2nd.

Our run D settles down a bit but they are battling and convert 2 3rd and shorts before getting the left edge again and going up 3. Short lived however as Sammy Watkins returns the KR 104 yards for a TD. A holding call manages to derail OMA and force a 3andO for the first defensive stop of the game, a big run from Fulton with a facemask tacked on puts us in FG range but we throw a pick downfield spoiling our opportunity to amke it a 2 score game. Another negative play on 1st for OMA leads to a 3rd down pressure and stop for our D so we take over for the 2 minute drill. A Spradling catch adn run moves us into long FG range and Crabtree takes an intermediate pass in stride to the housee for an 11 point advantage with a minute left. TE Duran and former Sodbuster Reedy have a pair of 30 yard YAC gains for OMA setting up a 1st and goal but our D holds so they settle for 3 and an 8 point deficit going into the half.

Well a lot of fireworks so far. We have yet to punt and are 5 for 5 on 3rd at nearly 10 yppc on the ground and mor ethan 8 in the air but had that oen pick. OMA is no slouch eaither at nearly 7 ypc and 7.6 in the air but the KR TD and some negative plays for OMA have reevaled some cracks. Either one of these Ds is gonna sustain some success or whoever gets more explosive plays will likely win out. Another thing ot watch si that OMA has run 41 plays to our 27.

We convert a couple 3rd and shorts with one via penalty and work the short game the rest of the way down the field to go back up 15 as Crabtree is having himself a day with Dole in the building at 9 for 11 for 114 yards and 3 TDs and we quickly are up to 39 plays and things look very even both teams runing the heck out of the ball wiht 18 carries and with 21-23 dropbacks for roughly 8 ypa with RZ and the KR being the differnce. Dole tacks on 20 to a 3rd down conversion grab and rookei Vinny Stone gets them to the RZ on a screen gain before Dole hauls one in to cut hte deficit to 8 for OMA. We are mixing it up with power runs and passes over the middle to our tertiary receivers and hti Spradling down the sidelin to go back up 15. OMA again hurts themselves with penalties and come up short on the 3rd adn short this time.

We go with bakc to back PA dragons to Crabtree but penalties lead us to a 2nd and 30 and we can't make it happen from there. OMA hits TE Duran a coupel times as the running game has dried up and DOle has 3rd down grabs to get them in the endzone so again we are 8 up with 7 minutes left now. Penalties are engating our gains now but we get the clock down to inside of 4 minutes and are very fortunate to recover a strip sack at our 32 befor epunting. And what do you know former Sodbuster Reedy takes it 82 yards setting up a key 2 point conversion but we meet the runner so OMA remains down 2 with 3 and half minutes left.

We can't mov eit at all on the ground so OMA is without TOs but they have more than 2 minutes left needing jsut a FG. Another hold offsets a big Dole gain setting up a 3rd and long when rookie SLB Andersen jumps his next target and gets the pick 6 sealing the victory. He even adds another during OMA desperation.

GG Smitty. Really both teams palyed excellent football in this one, the penalties were rough for you and we started 8 for 8 on 3rd down kinda shockign that you guys managed to hang in their as long as you did. Our first 6 possessions were 5 TDs and an INT so really remarkable stuff. We didn't let any one player beat us but that boy Harrison is a warrior for sure. We got 0 sacks and jsut 2 hurries but also had 3 blocked passes on the line. Our conservative D gameplan seemed to work as while we gave up soe big groudn gins and on short passes (6 YAC per reception is actualyl pretty bad) we took away the deeper passes.

What an amazing write up.

Great Game Ush.

I really thought we had you when Reedy got that PR TD but your team doesn't back down. Most teams crumble under our powerful vertical passing game but you contained it.

Great game and you deserve to be champs, you guys earned it.

Smitty, you need to give the refs more greenbacks next year.... They really hurt you.

Way to go Ush, glad to see you got my guy Kerry Bays a ring after that trade a few season back that put me in the bowl, looks like you found a way to get there, and then get it done

Congrats!

Thanks all, it is a satisfying feeling for sure.

This is a great league which is not only fun but very informative, seems like every season I am picking up on something that I see here and trying to work it into my own planning.

Onto 2057 as we try to do well with the target on our back for once.

A little home cooking given that the CFL Bowl isn't played at a neutral site.
