These undrafted rookie contracts are nuts. Texas spent some serious money in this stage.

Without looking at the file yet I will say this, when there are teams like Boston with their roster and cap conditions, supply and demand will drive prices to a significantly high level. I can only imagine what some of the "better" free agents went for today. This is why it is crazy for free agncy to only seem to work for some teams and not work at all for the rest. Of course FA2 is going to be absurd.

Now to check the file and see how crazy it has become.

Edit: I thought it would be worse than that.

Like I said. It pays to not be drafted. These rookie FA's are getting salaries that would be equivalent to a 2nd round pick. Jeremy Clark seriously got $2M which is equivalent to what a high 2nd rounder would get per season.

But like TT said. Supply and Demand.

Supply and Demand.

Supply and demand, indeed.

But let's not forget that these seemingly silly bonuses to undrafted rookie free agents who have little chance of becoming decent backups aren't without consequence. Bonus money of any kind erodes the team's bottom line, and a whole bunch of small-to-medium bonuses for URFAs will add up. And as we all know, if a team's bottom line isn't solid then they might not be able to get good staff to develop those players and win games.

we have tons of cap space. why not spend a million and take a chance on these guys if they don't work out we cut them. I only offer a 1 year deal so it's no big deal. Plus they are restricted for the next 3 years if they work out. So they may get a nice bonus but they will get the min. or close to it for the next 3 years. I consider these guys very low risk if you have some extra $ laying around.

That's the angle that I'm coming from.

I have a ton of cap space and might as well use it.

I suppose. I just have a hard time offering a large contract to a guy that wasn't even worth drafting. There are a couple of guys that were on my list that I put offers in for, but got decidedly outbid on them. That's fine. I've already got 61 players on my team. I'm sure these guys are looking for places that they actually have a shot of making the team. If those teams want to spend big $ on them. More power too them.

I just can't justify giving out that kind of money to these guys, so I'll get what I get. Although the Clark signing was a smart one. 1,990,000 in salary and 10,000 in bonus. If the guy doesn't pan out, he gets cut and is only out 10k.

Just remember that teams with insane cap numbers probably didn't do much in free agency and can only do so much with 7 draft picks so these guys may be worth it to them since they are an upgrade. A bonus isn't a problem if you have both the money and the need for a player.

Patience will out. . .I have to have the right player before I go after him in free agency. .. I have the time to develop players since I'm in no hurry to win now.

I actually withdrew initial offers to a few undrafted free agents because the numbers were nuts and wound up getting an undrafted free agent signed that had been overlooked, and he was and is, in my opinion, on a par with the other player everyone else had targeted.

Supply and demand. . .
