Oregon was desperately thin at receiver heading into their huge conference showdown with Huntington Beach, so they signed street FA Duane Muscarella and plopped him into the starting lineup. He responded with four catches, Rico Lynn was efficient, and Edgar Looper ran for 122 yards and 2 TDs to pull off a 34-28 win. The Wolfpack were down 24-7 early in the 3rd, but nearly rallied to win. Bert Foster threw for 392 yds and 2 TDs.
The Santa Cruz-Tucson tilt had plenty of offensive playmakers on the field, not that you'd know it. Ugly penalties, ill-timed turnovers, good punting and 3rd-down suckiness kept this one a low-scoring affair. The Toros had more shots at field goals, however, and pulled out a 16-6 win.
El Paso rolled up 482 yds and 21 first downs, so they scored a ton of points and blew out their opponent, right? If I'm asking that question, then odds are the correct answer is "WRONG". They needed two 4th quarter field goals to beat Boise 20-16. Two ill-timed turnovers and 7 penalties kept the Rockets in check - and Stampede fans are thankful for it.
When Dixon Finch hit his 34 yd field goal early in the 3rd quarter, Baltimore took a 24-10 lead and seemed to be cruising. But then Wes Harden went to work, tossing two TD passes and engineering another drive that resulted in an astounding 55 yard FG from A.J. Lageman to tie the game with 3:34 left. Brian Bauer would not be outdone, however, and he methodically led the Barbarians down the field on an 11-play, 65 yd drive that resulted in another Finch FG as time expired. Baltimore 30, Hartford 27.
Texas LB Sammy James was about the only player on the field to have an awesome game in a 10-6 win over Arizona. Sammy notched a sack and intercepted two passes, which were the only two passes thrown his way all day. Good for him.
Chicago's struggles seemed a thing of the past for the first half of their game against New Orleans. They led 13-10 and actually looked, well, competitive. But then they realized that they're Chicago, were outscored 20-3 in the second half, and decided to drown their sorrows in cocaine and hookers for the rest of the night.
Albany only amassed 289 total yards, but six Torpedoes turnovers allowed them to put up 27 points. That was way more than they'd need, as St. Louis only scored 3.
Casey Gallardo did all he could, but his four field goals wouldn't be enough for Death Valley as they fell one point short in a 13-12 loss to Anchorage. Shane Madison kicked two FGs of his own for the victors, and Mark Summers connected on a 33 yd TD pass to Donnell Fields.
Another defensive struggle took place in Detroit, where neither team could break the 300-yd barrier, red-zone visits were limited to one-per-customer, and a 36-yd fumble return for a TD would make all the difference for Omaha. 14-7, Arrowheads.
Derrick Banner was efficient once again, the Bulldogs' running game racked up 150 yards, and their defense forced Brent Caputo into three uncharacteristic picks in a 26-18 win over Brooklyn.
As with Tucson-Santa Cruz, Tennessee and Atlantic City's game featured a final score of 16-6. Also like the Tucson-Santa Cruz game, the team that starts with the letter "T" won.
Don't look now, but the "rebuilding" Las Vegas rounders are in the hunt for a Wild Card spot after a 30-7 drubbing of Tulsa. The Rounders got contributions from every phase of the game today, with Gerald Becker leading the way (246 yds, 1 TD). Don Paquette returned a punt 80 yards to the house, and Johnny Giles posted 3.5 sacks.
Fargo scored all of their points in the first half, and Honolulu scored all of theirs in the second half. Fargo's half was bigger by a 17-13 margin. Dustin Applin won POG honors with 104 rushing yards and TD.
Carl Bradford was quite efficient with his 21 pass attempts, completing 16 for 212 yards and 2 TDs. That was all Shreveport would need, as they won 21-7 over Cleveland.
Denver relied on their defense to score the majority of their points, with Cole Elam and Deron Moon both returning fumbles for TDs. Seattle's Walter Compton got in the act as well, but it wouldn't be enough as Denver won 24-21 on the road. Seattle put up 18 4th quarter points in a valiant comeback effort, but a Hunter Walker pick with :51 left ended their hopes.
San Antonio is now 11-1 after a 20-7 win over Boston, which at 9-3 is no slouch either. Both teams made some mistakes, but the Bees' George Prescott was just plain awful (11/23, 128 yds, 2 INTs, 3 sacks) before getting hurt and giving way to Irv Finley (who threw a pick of his own on the very next play). You can't give the Stingers opportunities like that, or they'll beat you 20-7.
