Below are some of the noteworthy games in CFL history:
2003 Season
Exhibition Week 1: Charleston at Seattle
The Charleston Sixpacks (now the Monitors) defeat the Seattle Thunderbirds 27-0 in the first game ever in CFL history.
Week 1: Albany at Oregon
The Oregon Ice defeat the Albany Engineers 23-13 in the first official game in CFL history.
Week 6: Tulsa at Tampa Bay
Tampa CB Erwin Koch set a league record with four interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown) to lead the Torpedoes in a 28-6 rout of Tulsa.
Week 9: Oregon at Detroit
The Detroit Vampires (0-7) hold the Oregon Ice (5-2) scoreless in the 2nd half to win their first game of the season, 19-13. Detroit would finish the season 1-15 while Oregon rebounded to win the league championship.
Week 14: Boston at Huntington Beach
The Boston Panthers (5-7) upset the undefeated Huntington Beach Capitalists (12-0) by a score of 17-14. Boston was led by RB William Sheehan who rushed 17 times for 138 yards and 1 TD.
Week 15: Tulsa at Anchorage
The Tulsa Talons (0-13) win the first game in franchise history 21-19 over Anchorage by returning two interceptions for touchdowns. The team goes on to win their final two games as well to finish the season with a 3-13 record.
Week 17: Chicago at Detroit
Chicago's Rodney Darr threw the ball 63 times and racked up 500 passing yards, both CFL single-game records, in a 29-28 victory over Detroit.
Wild Card Round: Atlantic City at Memphis
Memphis QB Joshua Urrutia knocks Atlantic City out of the playoffs by going 30-of-39 for 305 yards and 4 TDs.
Divisional Playoff: Cleveland at Baltimore
The Cleveland Flats (10-7) upset the Baltimore Bombers (14-2) by a final score of 24-14. The Flats' defense forced 4 turnovers against the offense that scored the most points in the regular season.
CFL Bowl I: Memphis vs. Oregon
Claude Matsumoto kicks an 18 yard field goal with 1 second remaining to give the Oregon Ice a 17-15 victory over the Memphis Express in the CFL's first championship game.
2004 Season
Week 2: Long Beach at Chicago
In a 22-3 victory over Long Beach, Chicago RB Arthur Brady rushes 42
times for a CFL record 227 yards, but fumbled three times.
Week 4: Huntington Beach at El Paso
El Paso QB Ernest Lorenzo only completes 3 passes for 18 yards but
rushes 38 times for 189 yards and 2 TDs. The Rockets beat the Capitalists 17-7,
but Lorenzo ends up with knee tendonitis.
Week 10: Seattle at Boise
Boise DE Ahmad Lowell records 7 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 2 QB hurries to
lead the Stampede defense in a 10-0 shutout of the Seattle Thunderbirds. Lowell
never had another multi-sack game and was out of football by 2005.
Week 13: Cleveland at Memphis
Cleveland LB Colby Stoner sets a CFL record by registering 18 tackles
in a game against Memphis. Stoner was later named the Defensive Player of the Year,
but on this day Memphis kicker Tobias Paschal kicked a 42-yard field goal
as time expired to give the Express a 16-14 victory.
Wild Card Round: Santa Cruz at Denver
Santa Cruz RB Forest Powell rushes for 194 yards to lead the Privateers
to a 20-14 win at Denver. Santa Cruz would go on to win two more road playoff games
and reach the CFL Bowl.
CFL Bowl II: Santa Cruz vs. Charleston
Charleston QB Timothy Gordon leads the Monitors to a 20-16 victory,
completing a a dream season in which he is named CFL Bowl MVP, League MVP,
Offensive Player of the Year, and All-League 1st Team Quarterback.
2005 Season
Week 4: Tucson at Honolulu
Tucson (2-0-1) and division rival Honolulu (3-0) are the top two teams in the
league according to the power rankings. Tucson leads 18-17 late in the game,
and holds onto the narrow victory as Honolulu kicker Glenn Hale misses the
game winning field goal attempt. Hale had been 9-for-9 on field goal attempts
prior to that miss.
Week 5: Memphis at Chicago
Chicago defensive end Frederic Diggs had five sacks in a 30-27 loss to
the Express, setting a new single-game record.
Week 10: Tucson at Fargo
Tucson QB Milan Hogan made 64 pass attempts, setting a new single-game
record as the Toros lost to the Boxcars, 20-6.
Week 17: Chicago at Detroit
In a 16-10 loss to Detroit, Chicago's Arthur Brady rushed for 131
yards to set the new single-season record at 1,888 yards.
Western Conference Championship: Boise at Honolulu
Honolulu (14-3) easily defeats Boise (13-4) by a score of 31-6 to advance to the CFL
Bowl. Honolulu's Ronnie Tu completed 17 of 26 passes for 241 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 INTs.
Boise quarterback Thomas Kuhn struggled and only completed 11 of 26 passes for 133
yards, 1 TD and 0 INTs. It was the last game Kuhn would play for Boise, and the next
season he became the starter for the Oregon Ice.
CFL Bowl III: Honolulu vs. Detroit
In another thrilling championship game, the Honolulu Blue Pacific came from behind
in the fourth quarter to defeat the Detroit Vampires by a score of 19-14.
2006 Season
Week 1: Albany at Chicago
Albany's Joel Foran set a new single-game record after rushing for 237
yards in the Crow's 31-10 victory over the Hitmen.
Week 5: Sacramento at Honolulu
In a 38-23 victory over Sacramento, Honolulu RB Joseph Gallego
racked up 243 yards on the ground to break the single-game rushing record set by
Joel Foran in Week 1.
Week 12: Sacramento at Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay's Felton Cooper kicked seven field goals to set a new single-game
record in the Torpedoes' 28-6 victory over the Dragons.
Week 13: Hungtington Beach at Fargo
In a 24-21 victory over the Capitalists, Fargo QB Dwayne Bridges threw two touchdowns
to break the single-season record for touchdown passes. He would finish the year
with 47.
Week 14: Shreveport at Boise
The Shreveport Pride (8-4) go up 24-7 early on the Boise Stampede (8-4). Boise rallies
back and sends the game into overtime at 24-24. The Pride who had been held scoreless
for a whole half of football dug deep to begin "The Drive" which consumed seven and a
half minutes of the overtime clock and resulted in a Carson Blume field goal for the
Shreveport win.
Week 15: Fargo at Tulsa
In a 26-13 victory over the Talons, Fargo's Dwayne Bridges was 39-of-45
for 354 yards to break the single-season record for passing yards, the single-season
record for pass completions, as well as the single-game record for completions.
He would finishthe year with 442 total completions and 5,215 passing yards.
Week 16: New Orleans at Boise
In a 24-21 loss to Boise, New Orleans WR Ronald Tibbetts had nine
catches for 198 yards to break the single-season record for receiving yards.
He would finish the year with 1,693 yards receiving.
Week 17: Seattle at Oregon
In a 19-13 loss to Oregon, Seattle's Charles Dever was 18 of 23 for 258
yards, 0 TD and 0 INT to finish the year with a new single-season record 103.2
quarterback rating.
Wild Card Round: Boise at Oregon
The Oregon Ice (11-5) held an 8 point lead over the Boise Stampede (11-5) with 2:04 to go.
Boise had the ball on their own 25 yard line, and proceeded to score a touchdown in 5 plays,
but failed to convert the two point conversion and trailed 17-15 with 1:18 on the clock.
Chance Craig recovered the onside kick for Boise and then caught a 37 yard pass to put the
Stampede in field goal range. Conrad Fisher kicked the game winning field goal that knocked
Oregon out of the playoffs.
Eastern Conference Championship: Detroit at Durham
The Durham Bulldogs (14-2) held a 24-16 lead over the Detroit Vampires (12-4) with 2:15 to go
in the game. Durham was forced to punt, and rookie 7th round draft pick Ernie Sutton returned
it 92 yards for the touchdown! Detroit completed the two point conversion and the game was
suddenly tied at 24. Durham went into the hurry up offense, but QB Edward Kimber threw an
interception and Detroit's Sammie Sells kicked a 54 yard field goal attempt with 27 seconds
on the clock to give Detroit another trip to the CFL Bowl.
CFL Bowl IV: Honolulu vs. Detroit
The Honolulu Blue Pacific defeated the Detroit Vampires 31-16 to become the
first team in league history to win two championships.
2007 Season
Week 1: Fargo at Tulsa
The Tulsa Talons held off the powerful passing offense of the Fargo Boxcars and win the game 28-24.
It was the first Tulsa victory over Fargo in the history of the CFL. Fargo rushed 4 times and
passed 59 times, but only completed 24 of those passes.
Week 7: Las Vegas at Anchorage
The Anchorage Wolfpack threw for 549 yards in a 52-13 rout of Las Vegas. WR Kelley McCaleb caught 9 passes for 293 yards and 3 TDs.
Week 10: El Paso at Sacramento
El Paso took an early 10-0 lead over Sacramento, but Sacramento came back strong and won 28-20 thanks
to Alexis Rounds 27 carries for 248 yards and 2 TDs. The win gave Sacramento an 8-1 record, but the Dragons lost their
last 7 games to finish the season 8-8.
Week 11: Anchorage at Boise
Anchorage scores 13 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to defeat Boise 34-31. The two teams
combined for 824 yards passing and 971 yards of total offense.
Divisional Playoff: Charleston at Hartford
The Charleston Monitors (12-5) upset the Hartford Attack (15-1) by a score of 48-41. The final
two minutes provided a lot of excitement. Hartford trailed 41-33 with less than two minute left
when James Oberg connected with Edward Trail for a 58 yard TD pass. The two point conversion
tied it at 41. With 56 seconds remaining, on 2nd down and 31, Charleston QB Landon Hurst threw
a short pass to Terrance Ryan who took it 89 yards for the game winning touchdown. Hurst finished
the day 30-44 for 498 yards and 6 TDs.
CFL Bowl V: Denver vs. New Orleans
The Denver Dynomite (13-6) defeated the New Orleans Raging Horde (13-5) by a final score of 20-16.
The key turning point in the game was when New Orleans' QB Randolph Kranz was knocked out of the
game. Rookie 3rd round draft pick Chris Harmon saw his first action of the year, but was no match
for the Denver defense. Harmon was only 6-16 for 71 yards, 0 TDs, and 1 INT. On the game's final
play he scrambled for 5 yards on 4th and 16.
2008 Season
Week 1: Atlantic City at Boston
The Boston Panthers ran their way into the CFL record books by rushing 63 times, topping their old
record of 61 set in 2005. Leading the way was RB Toothpick Lang who had 39 rushes for 170 yards
and 2 TDs. The Panthers held the ball for over 40 minutes and won the game 20-10.
Week 3: Denver at Anchorage
The Anchorage Wolfpack were thinking revenge during their week 3 game with the defending champion
Denver Dynomite. This was a rematch of the 2007 Western Conference Championship that Denver won
23-7. But in week 3 the Wolfpack got their revenge, scoring 27 unanswered 2nd half points to win
47-17. Wolfpack quarterback Lane Manuel passed for 500 yards, trying the CFL record. Manuel also
tied the league record for TD passes in a game with 5.
Week 8: Tampa Bay at Hartford
The Hartford Attack had one of the most dominating defensive performances in the history of the
CFL as they shut out the Tampa Bay Torpedoes 34-0. Tampa Bay was held to a CFL record low of 94
total yards and 6 first downs. They also turned the ball over 4 times and rookie quarterback
Nolan Shannon was sacked 5 times.
Week 9: Hartford at Atlantic City
The Hartford Attack (7-0) came into Atlantic City (2-5) as heavy favorites despite starting
backup quarterback Don Martinez. Martinez threw an interception in the final minute to give the
Phantoms an upset victory by a score of 20-17. These two teams met again in week 15 and Atlantic
City again came out on top, 13-3.
Week 16: Memphis at Fargo
The Fargo Boxcars rolled to a 37-17 victory over the Memphis Express, and the star of the day was
RB Elias Alvey. Alvey continued his TD streak, scoring 3 times and moved his 6 game total up to
14 touchdowns. Alvey's 17 rushing touchdowns on the year tied the CFL record.
Week 17: Chicago at Detroit
Chicago RB Arthur Brady needed 70 yards to reach 2,000 rushing yards on the season. He broke the
mark before halftime and finished the year with 2,056 rushing yards, a new CFL record. His 522
carries also set a new single season record.
CFL Bowl VI: Charleston vs. Denver
With just :28 left on the clock, Charleston tailback Deion Appleberry broke a 36-yard
run to the Denver 1, setting up Percy Alvarado's game-winning field goal as the Monitors
edged the Dynomite 33-31.
2009 Season
Week 1: Cleveland at Detroit
Detroit RB Monty Boyd became just the third player in league history to rush for
more than 240 yards in a game, gaining 241 on 28 carries in the Vampires' 21-7
victory over the Flats.
Week 3: Oregon at Arizona
Oregon WR Carl Markey caught seven passes for 240 receiving yards (third best in CFL
history) in the Ice's 27-24 loss to the Outlaws.
Week 7: New Orleans at Hartford
The Hartford Attack tied the single-game record for points scored in a 55-21
rout of the Raging Horde. Hartford QB James Oberg was 27-of-34 for 381, 5 TD, and 0 INT.
Week 15: Charleston at Durham
The Durham Bulldogs racked up 619 total yards in a 38-35 victory over Charleston, the third
highest total in league history and most in two seasons. Durham QB Edward Kimber was
masterful, completing 31-of-47 for 497 yards, 4 TD and 2 INT.
Week 17: El Paso at Fargo
El Paso WR Tom Sonkin caught eight passes for 121 yards to set the new CFL record
for receptions at 126 in a 23-20 victory over Fargo.
Wild Card Round: San Antonio at Shreveport
The Shreveport Pride recorded the first shutout in CFL playoff history in a 27-0
wild card victory of the San Antonio Stingers. The Pride also allowed a measly
164 total yards, another playoff record.
CFL Bowl VII: Shreveport vs. Denver
Kicker Gary Hutchins nailed three field goals and the Denver defense held
Shreveport to just seven points as the Dynomite clinched their second
CFL Championship in three years with a 16-7 victory over the Pride.
